Rattling the Bars: 121 Days Without Sleep

In this video by The Real News, Carol Strickman, a senior staff attorney here at Legal Services for Prisoners with Children, speaks about the California Prison System’s implementation this August of so-called “security/ welfare” checks every 30 minute, 24/7 in isolation cells in all of its state prisons. Strickman explains how these checks are causing incarcerated men and women severe sleep deprivation, resulting in serious physical and mental damage dramatically increasing the risk of suicide. Strickman, other advocates, and the family members and loved ones of those inside speak about steps they are taking to stop these checks and advocate for the rights of those in solitary confinement.
