Remembering Women Prisoners Who've Passed On

The Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, is a Mexican holiday that brings people together to celebrate the lives and deaths of those who have passed on. This year, a small group of artists and prison activists, including LSPC, came together with much love and creative energy to build an altar commemorating women prisoners who have died. We came together to grieve and heal from the terrible loss and injustice that lead to the death of women prisoners. But we also came together to celebrate their lives and make visible the names and faces of women who are so often hidden from us behind the walls. We also believed this altar would raise awareness among people who may never think about incarcerated women or what it might be like to be sick in prison.
