All of Us or None Bans the Box in San Francisco

In October 2005, LSPC's All of Us or None project achieved a major victory in our Ban the Box campaign when members of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted to stop asking about past felony convictions on applications for public employment. This win was a direct outgrowth of our Peace and Justice Community Summits, building on the testimony of formerly incarcerated people and their families as well as the relationships that we have built with policy makers since the summits. Through several intense months of meetings with our allies in San Francisco city government, we organized the necessary support to see our resolution passed through two subcommittees of the Board. Roughly 50 All of Us or None members and supporters attended the Board meeting at which our resolution was voted on, several of whom addressed the board during the public comment period. In addition to directly impacting the ability of formerly incarcerated people in the Bay Area to get jobs, winning the passage of this resolution in a major California city increases the profile of the Ban the Box campaign and the issue of civil rights for formerly incarcerated people in general.
