DHS Finds Abuse in Prison Medical Unit
In response to complaints from women prisoners and their advocates, Department of Health Services investigated a Skilled Nursing Facility medical unit at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla California, and issued a report charging that the prison "failed to ensure that residents were treated with dignity and respect."
 
LSPC Mourns the Loss of Sherrie Chapman
Sherrie Chapman, longtime LSPC client, friend and courageous fighter for better medical care, died on December 12, 2002.
 
Ex-Prisoners Donate Toys and Bikes to Oakland Youth
Dorsey Nunn, LSPC's Program Director, and members of Timers held a toy and bike giveaway for children of incarcerated parents in Oakland.
 
LSPC files objections to Plata lawsuit settlement
In May 2002, LSPC submitted objections to the settlement agreement in a major prison medical care lawsuit, on the grounds that it did not adequately address the unique health concerns of women prisoners.

In April 2002, a hundred protesters demonstrated at CCWF to show their outrage at the inhumane treatment and outright neglect of women in the prison's Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF).
